Palm Beach Gardens History Before major development occurred, the area was known for cattle ranches, pine forests and swamplands. John D. MacArthur purchased a large acreage and made plans to build a vast number of homes. In 1959 the land took the name Palm Beach Gardens and was incorporated as a city but it existed only in documents.
